Emergency hurricane shelters in Louisianna and FEMA
It seems, from all the people bitching about staying in the shelters in Shreveport and other parts of LA, that they don’t appreciate the fact they had a safe place to stay. They were fed and given cots to sleep on.
It’s a tough situation but bitching because you have to go outside the shelter 50 feet to a portapotty seems a bit ludicrous to me. Instead of bitching they should have been damn glad to have had any place at all to go to the bathroom.
They also bitched about not being able to get showers. Just exactly how many showers do they think they’d have gotten if they’d stayed in their houses? Water systems are messed up and not working, electricity is out and lots of places are still flooded.
I watched other women bitch because the shelters were only handing out two pampers and 3 baby wipes at a time. She said, well, they have huindreds of boxes of pampers so they could give us more. Yeah, right, stock up on them to take them home with you. The reason they only give out two at a time is so they can be damn sure there are some for everyone.
Bitching because you have to go to the counter 6 times a day to get diapers and wipes seems to me to be the height os stupidity. What else does she have to do? They’d be bitching a whole lot worse if there weren’t any at all. Everyone seems to think they are the only ones who should be able to get stuff. Me first and screw everyone else.
Sure, it’s tough being in a shelter with 1500 other strangers, crowded in like sardines but it sure as hell beats getting injured or killed in a hurricane. Now they’re bitching because they can’t go back home. Duh, the places are still flooded, still no electricity or water and roads are still blocked.
I’ll bet they bitch even more when they get back home. However there’s another problem with all of this. Gustav wasn’t as bad as everyone thought it was going to be so now tons of people are saying next time they aren’t going to evacuate. Lol, good luck, just don’t expect anyone to come save your ass if they have another mandatory evacuation and you stay.
Sheesh, the shelters they are bitching about are emergency shelters, not deluxe accomodations. An empty building that used to be a Sams club. Now just exactly how many batrooms do you think it had? Lucky if it had 4. Two public and two for employees. Naturally it didn’t have any showers, etc. It’s an empty store.
Some people, instead of being thankful for what they got, would rather bitch. Next time I hope they stay put so they can see what real hardship is. Seems simple to me, if you don’t like hurricanes, floods, etc. then don’t live where those things happen.
Hell, I won’t live in California because there’s no place to get away from earthquakes. I won’t live on any of the coasts because of hurricanes, I won’t live on any flood plains because I’ll get flooded sooner or later. If you build in those types of places I don’t think you have any bitch coming when a hurricane, flood or earthquake happens.
Now I’m not fond of winter blizzards or tornadoes but I’ve lieved with them for most of my life. I know how to be safe, I expect the electricity to be off for days at a time, if not weeks, I can put in an underground tornado shelter, I have in the past, and I can ride all those things out.
Choosing where you live is a choice you make. Don’t choose to live in places where you can have everything wiped out and you won’t have to worry to much about going to a shelter.
Altho, if I was in one of the shelters I’d probably be bitching as bad as the people staying there now. I thnk FEMA did one hell of a job this time despite all the bitching and whining. Much better than they did during Katrina.

Hi, it seems the evacuees in Shreveport are bitching again. Now the local television stations are running editorials about what the evacuees expect.
Evidently the people in the shelters think it’s an all expenses paid vacation rather than an emergency shelter that’s there to save their lives.
I suggest the next hurricane they should just stay home and deal with the consequences.
