New Addiction?

July 12th, 2008 by Old Dude Misc

I did something stupid the other day and now I have a problem. You see, the internet is a perfect place for people like me. I’m curious as hell but I have a very short attention span. That means I can speak on any subject for thirty seconds or so.

Anyway, I had to change my history setting to one day because I was constantly remembering something I read somewhere that tied in with something else I read at another place. I’d spend hours looking thru history to find it. I wasted a lot of time is what I’m trying to say.

I’ve put my mind into a different mode. I follow what strikes me at the moment but as soon as I leave a site I no longer attempt to remeber the information in any way. It should all make sense in my mind, someday.

Maybe I’m getting old but I still expect my mind to be sharp as a knife at all times. This new addiction is making me worse, not better.

I first noticed it at MyYahoo when the auto added the newsfeeds to the site. Every now and then something would go by and catch my eye and I’d be off looking at it. So I made a rule that I could go no further than the link I clicked on to get to the article. IOW, I could only read the original article.

That worked very well for quite awhile because I mostly used Yahoo for the television scheduled and after I discovered how to get to that page I didn’t go to my own page very often. Problem solved. Well, it was until I decided to click on the link that says News on Google which is my home page.

Whoa, pages of newsfeeds all set up and I didn’t have to lift a finger or know a thing. Yes, I know how to do it and there’s a reason I don’t do it for myself. Anyway, I am now wasting approx 4.5 hrs daily following those damn articles.

Oh hell, it’s a given that anyone with their own blog is already addicted to the interent and probably a few have way to much time on their hands. OK, that fits. I could live with just that as I don’t see a thing wrong with being addicted to the internet.

However, I draw the line at getting addicted to somethng that exists on my addiction. I know I’m addicted. Sheesh, proof, you say? Simple, I now know much more than I ever cared to know about a New York Yankee pitcher and catcher. I don’t give a rats ass about the Yankes, their pitcher or catcher.

I freaking read it because it was there and it was the last thing left on the page. I now have a rule that says only one link and it has to be a headline not smaller text links. I read faster than most people so I get a lot read everyday. It’s simply, in, processed, gone. Next. From then on it’s DeJa Vu all over again, Thanks Yogi. ;)
